Reimagining Solid Wood Furniture: The YJ Side Table

Lai Jiebin's Award-Winning Design Fuses Aesthetics and Functionality

With a long-standing interest in solid wood furniture, Lai Jiebin sought to create a piece that exuded a sense of stability and tranquility. The YJ side table, with its curved surface and organic design, is the result of this vision. It is more than just a functional piece; it is a testament to the potential of wood as a medium for artistic expression.

The table's unique properties lie in its organic curve design, which gives the wood a new 3D surface shape, enhancing its aesthetic appeal. The design strikes a balance between dynamic and static elements, integrating aesthetic elements and functionality in a harmonious manner. The visual flow of the table adds a sense of space to modern homes, offering users a unique and energetic feeling.

The YJ side table is crafted using 3D curved CNC processing, with the wood directly assembled post-cutting. The table top is coated with OSMO wax oil, leaving the primer unpainted. This process, coupled with the table's dimensions of 80cm in length, 54cm in width, and 70cm in height, results in a piece that is both visually striking and practical.

As a testament to its unique aesthetics, the YJ side table can serve multiple purposes. Beyond its function as a side table, it can also be used as a sculpture or decoration, adding a touch of artistic flair to any space. This versatility is a reflection of Lai Jiebin's commitment to creating furniture that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

The design was completed in Chongqing in February 2023, following extensive research into the potential of wood as a medium for furniture design. The challenges faced during the construction process, including the precise arrangement of wooden structures and joints, were overcome to achieve the final design.

In recognition of its innovative design and practicality, the YJ side table was awarded the Iron A' Furniture Design Award in 2023. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. It is a testament to the YJ side table's contribution to the world of furniture design.
